what is the significance of the festival and why did the baths start it?

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. International Women's Day is the perfect occasion to reflect on women's labour, activism and collective power which historically the day has been tightly linked with. This festival was born from the belief in the revolutionary potential of women's activism and labour and the importance of celebrating it.

What kind of things are on and who are they for?

This is the second year Govanhill Baths Community trust will be marking International's Women's Day. The festival will include events such as workshops, talks, walks and exhibitions, topped off with a march! The Baths have partnered with groups including Romano Lav, Unity Sisters, GAMIS, FEN, Print Clan, Women on Wheels, SAWA, Glasgow Zine Library and Fanny Riot. Some events are restricted to specific groups while some are open to everyone, and the use of the word 'women' is inclusive of Trans and Intersex women, as well as any non-binary people who are comfortable in a space that centres the experience of women.

Join the MArch!

The celebration will culminate with a march so join on Saturday the 11th March at Govanhill Park at 12pm. The Baths will be taking to the streets with other activists who are challenging stigmas in their communities, their workplaces and in their everyday lives. It’s a march for a more equal world; a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. Together we can celebrate women’s achievements and take action for equality!
